Children with Chronic Illnesses

At Revive Harmony Children’s Hospital, one of the prevalent chronic illnesses diagnosed in children is cystic fibrosis. This genetic disorder primarily affects the respiratory and digestive systems, leading to persistent lung infections and difficulties in absorbing nutrients (Cleveland Clinic, 2024). In terms of TR (Therapeutic Recreation) practice, two problem areas to be addressed include enhancing respiratory function through physical activities and supporting nutritional education and management to improve digestion and growth. Despite these challenges, children with cystic fibrosis often demonstrate remarkable resilience and adaptability, a potential strength that can be harnessed in recreational therapy. Regarding their level of functioning, while some children may require regular medical interventions and experience fluctuations in energy levels, many can participate effectively in modified recreational activities designed to accommodate their health needs, fostering both physical and social development.
