Children with Physical Disabilities
At Revive Harmony Children’s Hospital, we focus on assisting children with various physical disabilities, one of which is cerebral palsy (CP). Cerebral palsy is a neurological disorder caused by brain damage before, during, or shortly after birth, affecting body movement and muscle coordination (Mayo Clinic, 2023). Children with CP may experience difficulty in fine and gross motor skills, balance, and posture (Mayo Clinic, 2023). One of the primary problem areas to be addressed by recreational therapy (RT) or therapeutic recreation (TR) practice is improving these motor skills. Through activities like adaptive sports or aquatic therapy, therapists can help enhance muscle strength, coordination, and balance. Another crucial area is social integration. By engaging children in group activities, therapists can foster social skills and increase opportunities for forming friendships, which are vital for emotional well-being. Despite the challenges, children with CP often exhibit remarkable resilience and determination. These strengths can be harnessed in therapy to motivate children to actively participate in programs, leading to better outcomes in skill development and social interaction.
