My rhetorical analysis was a paper examining the rhetoric used in Laura Parker’s “We Depend on Plastic. Now, We’re Drowning in It”, article from National Geographic. I found that her audience was the general public and she wanted to bring attention to how important this issue really is. She wrote about statistics concerning the topic and her personal findings when she researched the topic. She used multimedia components to emphasize her points, which taught me more about how to effectively use media like photos and videos in my own writing to convince my audience of my own ideas. The actual writing of this paper taught me more about organization and how to properly format an analysis. I think the course objective that fit this rhetorical analysis for me was objective two. I was arguing that Parker effectively used pathos in her article to convince the audience to pay attention to what she was saying. Objective two is about understanding the nature of discourse, and I feel like I’ve gained a deeper understanding of debate from this assignment.
