Jobs:

I worked at Hummingbird Bar and Kitchen  located in Alexandria, VA for two years now. I worked as a hostess over two summer breaks and two winter breaks. I learned a lot working in a fast paced and social environment. Here are some things that I have gained from this experience.

  • Communicated with staff, bosses and customers.
  • Problem solved when in times of stress.
  • Time management knowing when someone should be sat, which goes along with being aware.
  • Being organized with reservations, wait lists and my station.
  • Used an IPad to write emails, create reservations, get in contact with customers and cancel reservations.
  • Answering phones and making reservations.
  • Handling customers money for to-go and pick up orders.
  • Working within a team, learning how to work with a diverse group of people.

 

Another job experience where I think I learned a lot of practical work ethic skills was when I worked at EquinoxSports Club in Washington, DC. I worked as a receptionist and sales associate. I enjoyed working around different professional individual and clients. Here are some of the skills that I learned and have used after in different situations and jobs:

  • Worked at the club’s spa and shop which helped me better my skills in excel spreadsheet.
  • Talked to how to talk to customers daily, over the phone or in person. Dealing with compliments or complains.
  • Sold products ranging from skin care to athletic wear.
  • Learned how to use a cash register and handled the customers money.
  • Made phone calls for upcoming appointments or returning a message.

Internship:

My frist internship I had was at the Alexandria Gazette Packet located in Alexandria, VA. I was an intern for the summer and learned valuable writing and interviewing skills that I have since then used in my projects and papers. Here are some of the other things I learned interning with the Packet:

  • I wrote, edited and published my own articles as well as other writers.
  • I conducted my own interviews.
  • Better my skills in editing and creating questions.
  • I shared my opinions and ideas in staff meetings.
  • Learned more about AP style.

College courses:

  • Media Productions ( Communications 355)
    • In media production I learned about live broadcasting and how to direct and produce a news program.
    • I learned how to operate all of the technology in the studio, the light board, teleprompter, cameras, switch board, and the audio.
    • During this course I contained to learn more about editing and filming with new cameras and equipment.

  • Fundamentals of Public Relations (Communications 280)
    • While I was taking this course I learned and used a lot of my public speaking and writing skills to complete many speeches and my individual PR portfolio. Within my PR portfolio I had to include a pitch, fact sheet, media release, backgrounder, and a listicle.
    • I also learned how to write up a campaign for a company and response strategies.

  • Communications Ethics (Communications 400)
    • During communication ethics I learned how to make my own case analysis , including situation, competing values, stakeholders, external factors, ethical theories, and decisions. We worked on creating our own cases through out the whole semester.

  • Advanced Media Writing (Communications 341)
    • After taking media writing , advanced media writing is up next. In advanced media writing I learned how to write articles in a timely fashion, use AP style, time management   and planning when it came to doing mutiple interviews , and my communication skills when working with a group or pitching ideas.
