The content in the ePortfolio shows my progression through the class as well as the overarching trend for development that the class takes. We began with the different strategies of rhetorical appeals and analysis in the journal entries which helped develop our own thought process in terms of applying those appeals and strategies. The journals were a way in which the students in the class could become accustomed to the different topics that would be used in the entirety of the class. The rhetorical analysis was the first real test of the application that was practiced and honed when completing the journals. What set the rhetorical analysis apart from the journal was the element of choice; we were able to choose which medium and topic we wanted to analyze. Throughout the rhetorical analysis, we were tasked to apply the different appeals and strategies learned in the journals. The Common Good Project was the way in which we were to ultimately show what we had learned in the class. It was the culmination of all that topics and strategies that had been taught over the course of the semester and it was on each member in each group to effectively apply their knowledge.
The topics and strategies used and learned in the class will be perfect in the business world and the career I hope to pursue. My ultimate goal is pursue a career in management where I am a leader among a great many people. The different topics I have learned will be easily transferred to this setting because they are all very relevant to the aspect of the business world. One of the major things that I will use is the different appeals like ethos, pathos, and logos. As a manager, it is important for one to work well with those that work under you and knowing how to talk with them is crucial. People are different and need different ways in which someone can and should talk with them. Some people might prefer to be given the facts when being talked to, some people might prefer to be shown empathy when being talked to, and some may prefer to be given an opinion by an expert in the field so knowing how to appeal to each type of person is very important as a manager. Also knowing which words to stay away from is important in the workplace; there are some words that might identify a certain connotation that may generate a hostile work environment so analyzing the words used in the workplace is also very important. I look forward to using these strategies in my future career and allowing them to shape me into an effective leader in my company.
