Bodies and CItizens

Throughout the class Bodies and Citizens, we learned about the relation between people’s body types (race, gender, etc…), and their citizenship and rights over the course of history. For my final project, I analyzed how women were treated and depicted through the history of the video game industry. Both this project, and the course at large, greatly surprised me in terms of what I was able to learn. Relating to the topic of “Bodies and Citizens”, I knew that unequal treatment due to your race, gender, sexual orientation, etc.. was a common practice in our history, and even still exists to this day. What I did not know however, was just how prevalent these beliefs are even to this day. I was shocked at how recent many of the issues we discussed were, and how ingrained these values of inequality are in our society. It served as a sort of wake-up call to action. I’m much more aware of the way people treat others differently simply because of their appearance, and I am thankful to this class for opening my eyes up to this.
