Week Two Book Club

Chapters 2, 3, &, 4

A. Identify the four elements of the habit feedback loop. Explain what each is using a personal example from your own work habits.

The four elements of the habit feedback loop are cue, craving, response, and reward. Cue is when your brain is being triggered to initiate a certain behavior. Craving is the response that you have when there is a motivation behind the behavior that is being targeted by the first element (cue). Response is how you react or do the behavior that is being triggered. Finally, the reward is what you are working towards and is the main goal of what you have been doing to reach it. These elements can be seen in my own work habits as follows: I set my alarm 30 minutes early for book club on Thursdays (cue), I want to feel awake, prepared, and on time for book club (craving), I have everything set up and ready before book club starts (response), and I am prepared for the book club meeting as well as feel awake thanks to waking up 30 minutes before instead of 10 minutes before (reward).

B. What are the 4 laws of behavior change? In the spirit of raising your own level of awareness, make a habits scorecard of the behaviors you engage in to complete work this internship. What is one behavior you have become more aware of as a result?

The four laws of behavior change are 1st law- make it obvious, 2nd law- make it attractive, 3rd law- make it easy, and 4th law- make it satisfying. Now looking at these laws, I looked deeper at my habits when it came to completing my work when it came to this internship. I created a scoreboard like the one from the book and it is as follows:

  • Find a reliable planner (+)
  • Copy down all the due dates (+)
  • Color code all the assignments  (+)
  • Check the planner every day (-)
  • Check email every day (=)
  • Work on assignments a little each day (-)

Looking at the habits scoreboard that I made makes me realize that I am determined to make the best of this situation that we are in this summer, but there are some habits that I can work on. The one behavior that I have become more aware of as a result of this internship would be that I don’t always work on my assignments everyday. There are some days that I have the motivation to get a lot of things done so I have free time for the upcoming days and then there are days that I wait to do things two days before they are do and rush to do them. I feel like I can work on this behavior during this internship because of everything we have to due this summer and needing to stay on top of things.
