A. According to the author, in order to make a habit stick, one has to make it satisfying. Unfortunately, most people have bad habits because they find good habits unsatisfying. Select a “good” work habit you find unsatisfying but want to engage in more often. According to the author, how would you go about making that habit satisfying?
A “good” work habit that I find unsatisfying would be completing assignments at my desk. This habit is one that I want to engage in more often because I feel like I can be more productive in completing my work if I complete it at my desk then completing it somewhere else. I would make this habit more satisfying by making my chair more comfortable and the desk less cluttered. If I made my desk chair more comfortable then I would be more likely to use my desk to complete my work instead of sitting on my bed or on the couch which is noticeably more comfortable then my desk chair. Also, if I make my desk less cluttered then I would be more likely to use it because there would be more room for me to work and have all the materials that I need to complete my work. Overall, I believe if I made my desk more attractive then I would be more likely to follow through in making this “good” work habit satisfying.
B. When tracking a habit, the author says “don’t miss twice” and “don’t break the chain.” How can you apply this idea when working with clients to help them improve their quality of life?
When working with clients, these ideas can help improve their quality of life by being applied to the activities and interest that they are involved in. If there is an activity that they are involved in that occurs on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday then you want to encourage them to not “break the chain” of attending this activity that they go to on those days. These ideas can also be used when they are looking to start a new leisure activity, but they miss a day of completing that new leisure activity. If the client does miss a day of completing their new leisure activity you could say the idea given by the author “don’t miss twice” giving them that encouragement to stick with this new leisure activity and to not miss another day of it. Overall, these ideas given by the author can be used in many different ways with clients whether it is based on an activity they are attending or a new leisure activity/interest they are starting.
