Chapter’s 17 & 18
A. As recreation professionals, boredom is a concept we deal with often. What does the author say about boredom and its impact on building healthy habits. Using his recommendations, give an example of a work habit that you have experienced boredom and identify how to overcome that in order to retain the “good” habit.
Boredom can impact building healthy habits by not offering exciting new ideas or incentives that might come along. When building habits you want to have things that will keep you motivated and engaged in sticking with those habits and boredom can greatly impact building that habit. Now in this sense, a work habit that I have experienced boredom with would be working on assignments a little bit everyday. I have overcome this boredom by offering myself some incentives by completing the work. These incentives help me to have motivation to continue to work on my assignments each day without the sense of boredom creeping in and allow me to retain that “good” habit.
B. Consider the concept of an “accountability partner”. How might you use this concept when working with clients?
Using the concept of an “accountability partner” with clients would actually be very beneficial especially if it is being used for a leisure activity or just attending programs. In regards to using an “accountability partner” with leisure activities you could pair clients up who are interested in the same leisure activities. If you pair clients up who are interested in the same leisure activity then they will hold each other accountable for following through on completing that leisure activity in whatever capacity it may be. In regards to using an “accountability partner” with clients to attend programs it would help to motivate them to come to the program being held if they knew that their friend/”accountability partner” was going to be there. This concept would be beneficial when working with clients because their partner could hold them accountable for not being at the program that week or participating in their shared leisure activity.
