Introduction and Chapter 1
A.) Summarize Mr. Clear’s story in a few sentences. As a future recreation therapist, when you hear Mr. Clear’s story, how do you feel about future client’s capabilities and capacity for improvement despite their disability?
Mr. Clear sustained a severe head injury during his sophomore year of high school when he was hit in the head with a baseball bat of one of his fellow teammates that went airborne. He had several facial fractures as well as a broken nose which caused him to go to the hospital where he started to have severe seizures. These seizures helped make the decision to put him into a medically induced coma until it was safe to bring him out of it. After months of therapy he went for varsity baseball tryouts as a Junior, but did not make the team and ended up playing junior varsity. That didn’t discourage him because he played varsity his senior year and later went on to play college baseball. In college, he worked hard and improved on his habits which helped him to make the All-American Academic Team as well as starting on the team as well. As a future recreation therapist, when I read about his story and all that he accomplished it goes to show that if the client’s are focused on their capabilities as well as their capacity for improvement they could do anything that they sent their minds to.
B.) The author states “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems” (Clear, 2018, p. 27). What does he mean by this statement? As you begin to develop the systems necessary to be a successful recreational therapist, what systems might need improvement to support your goals? Give an example.
The statement means that you cannot reach the level of your goals that you set for yourself because you will only rise when the level of your systems that you are using to help you reach that goal start to rise. When thinking about the different systems that go into becoming a successful recreational therapist there are some that I would focus more on to help me to improve. Some of these systems would be improving my implementation skills, working on my rapport with clients/co-workers, and working on the APIE process would be some of the main systems that I would focus on that would help me in becoming a successful recreational therapist.
