Week Four Book Club

Chapter 8 & 9

A. What is the role of dopamine in making a habit attractive? How could you use this idea when working with clients to help them improve their leisure habits?

Dopamine plays a lot of roles when it comes to making a habit attractive. In chapter 8, there are examples of how a cocaine addict has a dopamine spike when they see it instead of when they actually do it (Clear, J., 2018). That example stuck out mostly because you would think addicts would get the excitement from doing the drug instead of seeing it and that helped to show how dopamine helps to make a habit attractive. Dopamine is important in making a habit attractive because it can also help drive you to stick with making that habit a good one. This idea could be used when working with a client when improving a their leisure habits by having something that excites them that goes along with that leisure. For example they want to walk on the treadmill more and they like to watch television so they can pick a show that they only watch while walking on the treadmill.

B. According to the author, there are 3 social groups. How can you use the influence of these groups to improve your work habits? Use an example to illustrate your point.

When looking at the three social groups, I believe I could benefit from each of them. I do not see myself in just one of the social groups that the author talks about because there are benefits to all three of them. In the first group, I would use those benefits to actually learn from others mistakes since you are learning from those close from you. If you are able to learn from the people close from you and their mistakes then it is able to build off those and improve on your work habits. In the second group, I could see that following what other people are saying is the answer even if it isn’t the right answer shouldn’t be what you say is the answer. If I were to improve on my work habit I would make sure to not follow what everyone else says the answer is and to follow what I think the answer is to the problem. Finally, the last group I think is the group that I do not see myself in that group as much as I could as the other two. I believe that having that power that was mentioned in that group is a great work habit because it helps to drive you in getting things done.
