Book Club-Week 3

According to Clear, habit-stacking is a special form of an implementation intention. The habit stacking formula is “After (current habit), I will (new habit)”. An example Clear gave in the reading was “Gratitude, After I sit down to dinner, I will say one thing I am grateful for that happened today.” It is the process of associating one habit with another habit. If you want to improve something in your life, it is a good idea to “stack” another good habit on top of it. I can apply this concept to my life in multiple ways. However, in regards to improving my work habits during this internship process, I can use the following statement: “Productivity. After I open my laptop, I will complete the first work assignment on my To-Do list.” By following this statement, I will be able to be productive instead of endlessly scanning the internet looking for motivation.

In regards to the first law of behavior change, in order to develop a new, better habit one must “make it obvious”, and to eliminate a bad habit one must “make it invisible.” I can apply this to my work life in multiple ways. A habit that I am working to improve is to not procrastinate when it comes to completing my assignments earlier on in the week. In order for me to make a good work habit obvious, I have put a To-Do list on my laptop home screen so it is the first thing that I see when I open my laptop. Yes, I have already had an agenda in my room that it color-coded and goes to the end of the internship, but I realized that I would help me to write it down twice. I have always been a person who loves to plan. However, by having the To-Do list on my home screen on my laptop, it makes the good habit more obvious and helps me stay on task. Lastly, in regards to make a bad habit invisible, I have turned my text-notifications off on my lap-top so I am not constantly distracted by the messages popping up in the corner. Yes, I still have access to my cell-phone but usually I have the sounds off on my phone so I am not constantly checking my phone. By turning off the notifications on my laptop, I have made the bad habit invisible.
