Book Club-Week 5

My mentor works at Bon Secours Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, Virginia which is a community hospital. However, she works on the Behavioral Health Unit as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist leading groups and interventions with the patients. In this population, something that often happens is the patients might not want to go to group due to the fact that they are aware they will not be there long. Since, the patients stay at the hospital is usually very short and quick ranging from seven to twelve days due to insurance, it can be hard for the patient to find the desire to go to group. Some patients just want to get off of the street for a couple of days and don’t have any desire to get better at that time. They might believe that they will not receive anything from group so why even bother showing up. A good way to increase friction towards a bad habit is the simple fact that they are in the hospital. Since, they are not able to do drugs while they are receiving treatment, they are able to detox. This eliminates the bad habit for the given moment and allows the person to realize that they don’t need the drug in order to survive. An example of decreasing friction to a good habit is by stopping by the patient’s room and personally inviting them to group. Not only can this build rapport with the patients, this can also give the patients the ability to grow and learn something positive by attending group instead of just lying in bed. Even though the patients are only at the hospital for a short time, it is crucial for the patients to receive the treatment because the smallest lesson from an intervention might lead to the biggest change in the patient’s life.

Using the 2-minute rule, something that I would use to help me with not procrastinating as much is to be prepared before I began working on an assignment. This means that I will have everything that I need in order to focus on the given task at hand instead of starting the assignment and realizing I don’t have the information that I need to continue. Another aspect of this concept is that I will make sure I have my computer charger next to me when I begin the assignment. This will prevent me from getting up and leaving my “work environment” and getting distracted. Overall, the slightest improvements can impact my work habits in big ways.
