Why I want to be a teacher

I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. While all my classmates were drawing pictures of the firefighters or pilots that they wanted to grow up to be, I was drawing pictures of teachers. When I was young I simply wanted to be a teacher so I could teach people all the things that I thought I knew. Now that I’ve grown up and had experiences with good and bad teaching, I realize there is so many more reasons why I want to become a teacher.

Throughout my educational career, I have experienced both good and bad teachers. No matter which list they landed on, they all helped me decide the kind of teacher I would become. As a teacher I will form relationships with each of my students, they will know that they can confide in me and come to me for help when needed. Although I will be a rather personable teacher, my students will still know that I have standards that they must meet. However, I will not be a teacher that expects so much out of my students that they dislike coming to my class.

The idea of being able to change a child’s life just by sharing my love of physical education with them makes me that much more excited to begin my career. I believe that teachers have a responsibility to their students. A responsibility to help the students better themselves, a responsibility to give the child a positive role model, but most of all a responsibility to give each student a chance to grow and become whoever they choose to be.

Although physical education teachers are seen as expendable, I believe that they are quite the opposite. As a physical education teacher, I will have the responsibility of teaching students skills that will be with them their entire lives. Skills such as proper eating, exercising, sportsmanship, and teamwork just to name a few.
