"What tools do students need to increase independent comprehension?"
When I first thought of this assignment, I knew that I wanted to do something with music and comprehension. I have seen posts on the internet about using song lyrics in the classroom to help with comprehension and I wanted to see how this would actually work and what it would look like. However, I was unsure how I would take it from there. Once I met with my tutee and talked to the English teacher, we learned that her gap was in comprehension, which was what I wanted to focus on anyways. However, I still did not have a focus outside of that. That is when I realized that I was asking my tutee questions, she was able to answer surface level questions just fine but was not really able to answer much else outside of that without me prompting her. This lead me to my question, “How can we encourage students to make their own connections to increase comprehension?” This quickly turned into “What tools do students need to increase independent comprehension?” Through this, I was able to determine how to teach skills that are essential to promoting independent comprehension and how to implement it in the classroom.
