Professional Self

  1. My purpose for working is to help people that need it the most. I do not know what I fully want to do yet career wise but I know it will have something to do with helping those in need. For example, Behavioral Analyst, Forensic Social Worker, etc. Another reason for working and getting a good job is to make my parents proud. They have both been super hard workers and I want to show them that I can be as well. My last reason for working is to make money to support myself and my family. I need to make money so I can travel and do all the fun things that I want to do.
  2. One thing that really motivates me is how successful the rest of my family is. My sister is a trauma ICU registered nurse and my parents own a company. Being surrounded by all these successful individuals makes me want to be successful in my line of work too. Another thing that motivates me is knowing that I will be able to help someone one day who might not be able to help themselves. No matter what specific career path I take, I know I will be helping someone in need. Finally the last thing that motivates me is the feeling of pride and accomplishment I get when I have finished a task. It always feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders and that alone motivates me to get everything done so I can relax.
  3. An experience that made me feel fulfilled is volunteering at the food pantry at home. Every-time you are done with a shift, you feel like you have done something good for the community. It makes me feel good to know that I helped even if it was just a little bit. Another experience that makes me feel fulfilled is when my sorority and I go clean up the highway on Farmville Road. We do it every semester and it is a great feeling to be able to help clean up our little town a little at a time. Also through my sorority we work with the girls scouts a lot and last saturday we had an event with them. This made me feel fulfilled because the younger girls were having so much fun and their parents said they would not stop talking about it the rest of the day. It made me feel so happy that we were able to put on an event that made those young girls have so much fun that they would not stop talking about it.
  4. I had a job all throughout high school working as a lifeguard for our public pools. I enjoyed being in the sun all day and getting a good tan. It was also fun to be able to swim whenever I was not on stand. It was super helpful on the really hot days because it was very easy to overheat and get dehydrated. I also enjoy working with people and with this job we are able to talk to the public and help them with their needs. Having this job for so long and working so closely with the public helped me realize that I wanted to help people as a career. It also made me understand that I am good in serious situations and can act fast when someone is in trouble. Some things I did not enjoy about this job was that kids would come by themselves and not listen to the lifeguards. They would continue to run, flip, and dive even after we have told them to stop multiple times. I also did not like the fact that some kids and older adults did not know how to use the bathroom correctly. Somehow they miss the toilet more often than you would think. I also did not like the fact that they blamed the weather on the lifeguards. If it were to thunder or lighting we would need to get the patrons out of the pool. But it almost seemed like they did not care about their safety or ours because they still wanted to keep swimming. Or they would request a refund even though they had been there all day long. In conclusion, some individuals are hard to work with but working with people for so long made me know how to deal with different situations.
  5. I think one hard skill I possess is working with social media. Everyone today is good with social media, however, I can do it from a PR standpoint. On my social media I post PR for my sorority when there are events coming up. I have even done some PR for my parents company before as well. Another hard skill I would say I have is financial management. I have always been good at saving my money and I invest in a certificate of deposit. I have to help my sister with her finances sometimes too because she likes to spend all her money as soon as she gets paid. I would also say that I am good at project management. I work well with others and have no problem taking the lead on projects that need to get done. I am able to complete all my work on time and do it well, so that my group mates never have to worry about my work. Some soft skills I have is being a good problem solver. When a problem arises I do not tend to freak out and not know what to do. I usually stay calm and assess the situation to come up with the best way to remove the problem without it affecting anything else. Another soft skill I have is having a good work ethic. I am reliable when it  comes to getting my part of the work done, I do my best on the work I have to complete, and I have discipline. All of these factors are needed when having a good work ethic, so you can stay focused and get everything done efficiently.
  6. I would say I am very organized and detailed with things I have to complete. For example, I make a list at the beginning of each week so I can be prepared for the week and know what I have to get done. It really helps to know what I have to do that week so I can plan what needs to be done that day so I am not trying to do everything at the last minute. Along with that, I am very good at time management. I usually give myself enough time to get the things I need to get done completed. It is pretty easy to stay on task and have enough time to do everything when I plan out my week. I think people would also describe me as working well with others. When doing projects for classes, I always get my part done on time and efficiently so that we can get a good grade. If someone else in the group is having a busy week and can not complete their part efficiently I will usually step in and do some of their work as well.
  7. 1. I have used the thinking/problem solving competency when I was struggling to pass math last semester. I knew I was going to end up not passing the class if I kept doing what I was doing. So I started going to office hours to talk about the homework questions I was getting wrong, going before the exams, and going after to talk about the exam and what I missed on it. After doing this my exam scores significantly improved from a fifty-six on the first exam to ninety-sixes on the next two exams. By realizing there was a problem and thinking about what I should do I was able to solve the problem early enough to where I still got an A as my overall grade. 2. I used the teamwork/collaboration competency by working on a group project over the summer for one of my classes. I was taking a summer class and as part of our final grade we had to do a randomly grouped project. With not being in an actual classroom and not knowing anyone, we had to try and work together on this project. We had to work so much harder because we could not meet up to talk about it. But we pushed through and were able to complete the project by communicating through canvas. Through this project I was able to learn how to be a better team-worker/collaborator. 3. I was able to use professionalism/work ethic through my job as a lifeguard and working with my parents at their work. I used this competency by staying respectful, being organized and prepared, and being on time to work. When working with my parents I had to figure some things out by myself because they had their own work to do. Which taught me how to take initiative because I had to figure things out without having someone talking me through every little step. Being a lifeguard taught me to stay focused for long periods of time while I am on stand. Being able to take initiative and staying focused are just some of the many things I did that showed my professionalism/work ethic while working as a lifeguard and for my parents. 4. I use the oral/written communication competency everyday with my professors, friends, and family. But more specifically I use this competency in my classes everyday. For example, I use oral communication when presenting projects, answering questions, and just talking to my professors in class. I use written communication when writing papers and doing assignments for my classes. Throughout my college classes I have been able to get better at presenting in front of people and have been able to improve on my writing skills. These skills will help me significantly in my future job as well.

  1. I would say when writing this Cover Letter and Resume I attempted to present my best self and accomplishments to the employers. During this project I had limited space to present myself and catch a Hiring Manager’s attention. There will be many individuals applying so I wanted to stand out from the rest of the candidates. The components I think I used from impression management is conformity, self-presentation, and self-promotion. I used conformity by writing my Resume and Cover Letter in a common style that many others use. I used self-presentation and self-promotion by trying to sell myself to the employers to hire me. I am promoting my best qualities and all of my excellent accomplishments. Impression management is very important in the workplace because employers are more likely to hire or listen to someone who is driven and has a good attitude about work.
  2. When you are new to a job it is stressful trying to learn the people and the job policies and procedures. It is all so new and fast paced it might be hard to keep up for awhile until you get into a routine. It would also be stressful being an RBT because you are working with kids all day. You never know what their moods are going to be like, whether they’re going to be crying, throwing a tantrum, or even hitting you. This job can also be stressful because it is different every session. All the children you work with are not going to be the same. So you have to understand that and try to figure out a way they feel comfortable enough with you so the Behavioral Analyst can get the information they need.
