Survey Question Assignment
There are many practices that ensure good survey research. Some of these include, using short items, meaning the questions are short. Not using negatives is another, in other words making sure not to use the word not because it can be confusing. Making sure your questions aren’t double barreled, this means making sure you only ask one question not two in one, a good tip is to avoid using the word “and” in your questions. Making sure your questions are relevant to the study at hand, don’t ask questions if they aren’t essential to your study. These are just a few of many different guidelines to follow. Our research question for this experiment is, how will family fun time activities affect parental involvement. In order to answer this question we will be asking parents “Did this activity encourage your family to interact with one another while completing it?”. This question addresses the dependent variable we are trying to measure, parental involvement. For the independent variable, we will be asking parents “What is the highest level of education you’ve received?”. These questions are well written because they ask about the main ideas we are trying to find without straight up asking the parents if they personally think they are involved. If we were to ask parents, “how involved are you with your child”, they may not accurately represent their actual behavior because they either want to make themselves look better or they truly don’t know. This way we can compare their answers together and also find out if education level is correlated with involvement levels.
