I have had two major experiences with volunteer work that have shaped me significantly as a person. The first took place at Oakland School during the summer of 2016. I, an alumni of Oakland, returned to assist the teachers and watch some of the younger children. My duties included sorting papers, helping children with letters, and guiding groups to and from activities. I believe that this experience taught me invaluable lessons on dealing with a school environment, which I will need in the event that I am hired as a school librarian.
My second and most formative major volunteer experience occurred during the fall of 2019. I was the social media manager for the literary magazine K’in; my duties included tweeting from the K’in accounts at least one per day, spotlighting works from K’in, and coming up with ways to gain followers’ attention. From this, I learned the importance of marketing and sending one’s work out into the world. I also received several invaluable pieces of writing advice during my time at K’in, which has influenced my body of work.
