The P’s

Purpose & Process.

Using a Prezi to express myself through artwork has been a good use of a visual story I can share with others. In the prezi, I am describing where I came from, where I am, and where I want to be all through images. Not only does this give purpose to my writing that I have composed down below, but also illustrates the process that I used in creating a final piece of my own work. I am able to take what I know about myself, create that through visuals, and bring it to life. When reading, A “Virtual Fieldtrip”: Service Learning in Distance Education Technical Writing Courses, I found this quotation to be very accurate. “In a virtual environment, service learning provides students with an opportunity to connect and remain grounded in the real world.” Students wrote that service learning “provides the students with real life scenarios” and that “Students can get real world feedback and use the experience as a step into reality” (Soria, 2013). By creating something on paper, then uploading it to a technology program, in a way I am bringing my work to life because that is where we are in this day and age, evolving with technology every day. For me, art has many purposes but one in particular is being able to write about your emotions. I find this especially true for students who have a hard time speaking or making connections with others. While reading, “When Arts Meets Enterprise: Transdisciplinarity, Student Identities”, the author explains how students are able to empathize with others when writing, a great example of how writing deals with more than just doing it to be graded. It is said, “In this course, students often visualized the meaning and purpose behind their documents by placing themselves into the shoes of their audience(s); they imagined being their audience(s) and viewing the documents from the audience’s perspective” (Soria, 2013).

My story of my mind map:

I was born in Indiana, then moved to Richmond, Virginia when I was two years old. ->My love for the Colts started because of where I was born. I also have loved Peyton Manning ever since I was little because he was the quarterback for the Colts for several years.-> I used to consider myself a country girl but would not say that I am anymore because I love being in the city downtown Richmond.-> A few other symbols of my life that are important to me are: the number 10, which has been my number when playing sports like basketball or softball, and a gum-ball machine because I enjoy chewing gum, it helps me concentrate.->I have wanted to be a teacher since the 4th grade and it is still a passion of mine to teach young children.-> I however did not enjoy reading when I was younger, but have learned to like it a lot more now.-> I also am a religious person so I thought that was important to add the cross on my mind map about myself.-> My favorite animal is a koala bear and one day I hope to travel to Australia to see them.->Music is a big part of my life and always has been. I listen to music every day and it calms me down in stressful situations. I hope to incorporate plenty of music in my classroom to hopefully help comfort my own students.->The snowflake on my mind map symbolizes individualism and the clover symbolizes luck and how I am Irish as well.-> Painting and art are also passions of mine that I like to do in my spare time.
