Reflection

Through The Bad-News Letter and Persuasive Letter, learning outcome one was achieved. This learning outcome stated, “analyze and produce writing genres according to the rhetorical situation of workplace contexts.” In the Bad-News Letter I learned how to relay negative information in a positive and constructive way. I was tasked with announcing the cancellation of casual Fridays. However, I had to explain it in a positive way and without negative language. This part was difficult for me because I had to think deeply about how to present the information in a constructive way. I also have never had to present bad news to a group of people in a high stakes situation, so I spent a lot of time editing perfecting this memo. In the Persuasive Letter, I was tasked with persuading a hotel chain to buy my fake company’s fitness package. This letter was much easier for me than the Bad-News Letter because I have written a few persuasive documents throughout my education. The second learning outcome achieved in these assignments was “conduct research to create content for a variety of professional documents.” I researched how to create a memo and a business letter for these two assignments. I used PowerPoints from class and our class textbook as reference when creating the layout for these documents. The Bad-News Letter was formatted incorrectly. The spacing throughout the document was incorrect. However, the format of the Persuasive Letter was correct. In the future, when I am tasked to create a memo, I will research further to format it correctly.
