Conclusion

Throughout ENGL 470: Professional Writing, I developed an understanding of and applied the professional writing principles to a variety of workplace contexts. In particular, I updated my resume, learned strategies for tactful communication in memos and letters, developed a brief, yet engaging multimedia presentation, created an effective and visually-appealing brochure, and collaborated with a team of peers to create and present a full professional report. However, the most important skills I gained from this course were not tied to a specific genre, but rather arose from the practice of considering the audience and purpose of a given document. Thus, ENGL 470 facilitated the development of oral and written communication skills that are applicable to a wide variety of academic and professional contexts. I will continue to incorporate my knowledge of rhetoric, purpose, audience, and plain English language in future communication with my colleagues, professors, and clients as I begin my preparation for a legal career.
