Service is anything you do to help others. As a pillar of the Honors Community, it serves as a reminder that there is more to the world than just ourselves. There are many other people who need our help, and we, as Honors students, can make a tremendous difference in the world.
My major experience with service in the community was during the Honors Retreat at the beginning of the year. Every student had to do a service project to help Farmville, and my job was to help organize stuff at the ASPCA. It was hard work, and I remember being part of a long line of people passing an object towards its rightful place. Though it did get tedious at times, we were able to pass the time by singing Christmas carols, despite the fact that it was August. Boy, it felt good when we were done! But it felt even better to see the look of gratitude on the lady’s face and to know that we’d done so much to help her and her organization.
That is what service means to me. Our selfless actions can make the community a better place.
