Modern Western Civilization was an easier class than I thought it would be, to be honest. We basically spent every day listening to lectures and taking notes on what Mr. Munson told us. We had several reading quizzes and map quizzes. The whole class was graded on a points-based system: the more points you had at the end of the semester, the higher your grade was as a result. We covered everything from the Enlightenment all the way through the Cold War. In the end, the real meat of our grade was based on two midterm exams, a final exam, and a research paper (which is linked below).
I learned a lot from this class, especially while writing my research paper. I was doing my paper on the role of Serbia at the beginning of the first World War, as well as they role they played in causing said war. It was a real eye-opener. For instance, there was a secret Serbian organization called the Black Hand that played a huge role in the assasination of Archduke Ferdinand. They even provided weapons to the conspirators. I didn’t know this before. Thanks to Western Civilization, I learned all kinds of new things. I hope to continue learning new, interesting information in the future.
This is the research paper we had to write for this class (dated April 12, 2018). I chose to write about Serbia’s role in the beginning of World War I, and I found a lot of useful information about their political shake-ups. It was really fun to research.
