Oh, Writing Fiction. I think this class was my favorite out of all the ones I’ve taken so far, but maybe that’s just because I love writing. For the first half of the semester, we spent our time reading short stories and talking about them in class (this included quite a lot of quizzes). For the second half, we had to write two short stories, and we used class time to workshop each other’s stories. One of my stories is included at the bottom of the page as evidence.
What did I take away from this class? Well, I learned a lot about how to write better stories, especially from all the stories we had to read. The writing workshops also proved to be immensely helpful. I did a lot better on my realistic fiction story (which is the one included below) than I did on my fantasy-science-fiction-ish story, and that was mainly because I had trouble with world-building. So, in the future, I will have to work on world-building in my stories, as well as establishing good relationships between characters. Overall, this experience has taught me a lot about my own strengths and weaknesses in writing, and for that, I am thankful.
This is a story called “The Weakness of the Family” that I wrote for this class (dated March 22, 2018). It is the better of the two stories I wrote, and I really appreciated all the feedback (positive and negative) I got from it. It also helped me learn to play to my strengths.
