Goal #2: Writing and Research

Writing and Research was the first true English class I took at Longwood, and in it, we learned how to write essays. Narrative essays, persuasive essays, informative essays…if it was a type of essay, we wrote it. We became masters in both MLA and APA format, and we slaved over outlines, conclusions, and (of course) constant revisions. One of those essays is below. It was a lot of work, and at times, it felt monotonous, but the lessons we learned made it all worth it.

So many other classes have required me to write essays. Anthropology, Western Civilization, World Literature…even Acting 1 had me write a mini-essay of sorts. If it hadn’t been for this class, I might not have done as well in other classes. Writing and Research helped me perfect the essay format.

The essay included here, which is about climate change, began because we had to write an essay about our position on an issue. I chose climate change mainly because I didn’t want to choose something that would just make me upset (like immigration), so I picked a safe option, and I did research accordingly. In the process, I learned so much about climate change that I didn’t know about before, and I applied that new information into my writing. That is what this class is all about. You research a topic, then you take your newfound wealth of information and apply it to your writing. I know that what I learned in this class will help me in many a college essay to come.

This is the persuasive essay I wrote on climate change (dated November 15, 2017). What started as just me wanting to talk about a topic turned into a rather passionate rant about a grave issue that I feel is plaguing the world.
