During my spring semester of 2021, I studied abroad at Plymouth University in England. It was a very interesting experience, especially since it was my first time staying in another country for an extended period of time. Right away, I noticed many differences, including the fact that in England, everyone drives on the left side of the road instead of the right side. (This annoyed my father to no end.) I also met many interesting people, especially my flatmates, and we discussed our differences in culture. One highlight occurred when I told them what Thanksgiving was during a walk through Plymouth.
Although my trip was cut short due to COVID, I still got a lot out of it. During the two and a half months I stayed there, I visited all sorts of places that I never would’ve gotten the chance to visit back in America, such as Stonehenge, London, and various castles. Furthermore, I got to experience life through the lens of a different country and its culture. There’s a lot more to the world than just America, which is no doubt why the Study Abroad program is deemed essential to Honors students. It helps us see life through another pair of eyes.
