As a student at Longwood and a resident of Farmville, I have been presented with numerous opportunities to perform valuable community service. I have worked several shifts at FACES Food Pantry through volunteer efforts with the Honors College and the National Society of Leadership and Success. In this role, I help sort and package food so that it can be delivered to low-income families in the surrounding area.
I have also volunteered several times at the Southside SPCA. My suitemate and I go together and play with cats and dogs staying in the shelter, who desperately need company as they wait for loving homes.
Additionally, during Summer 2017, I received an opportunity to work on a SURI project with Dr. Lettner-Rust. In addition to doing my own independent research on visual rhetoric in the graphic novel Watchmen, I assisted her with her work on methods for first-year English assessment. This work will contribute to the creation of the new general education course for first-year composition, English 165. I value this experience because it allowed me to perform an important service for the future generations of Longwood students who will take this course.
