Youth Culture in Post-Apartheid South Africa

To complete the requirement for Honors ENGL 400, I took Youth Culture in Post-Apartheid South Africa. This course, taught over the winter intersession in Capetown, South Africa, focused on citizenship writing and provided a basic overview of rhetorical techniques. Entering this course, I was a) extremely nervous to travel internationally for the first time, and b) skeptical (as a Rhetoric and Professional Writing concentration) about how a rhetoric class for all majors would go. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how well the experience went on both accounts. Throughout my time in Capetown, I underwent a lot of personal growth and learned that I am capable of adjusting to the demands of a foreign place. Additionally, hearing other students’ perspectives as members of other disciplines added to my understanding of how rhetoric functions throughout a variety of fields.

Below is a picture from one of my favorite parts of my study abroad: the safari at Aquila Private Game Reserve. For my group’s final project (a children’s travel magazine), we wrote largely about the animals we saw there and the reserve’s many conservationist efforts.
