Advocacy

Dear representative Jennifer Wexton,

As a constituent, I urge you to support the recognition of Eating Disorders Awareness week.

This issue is important because of the high mortality rate, widespread misunderstanding and stigma, impact across demographics, potential for recovery, and need for systemic change.

Her are some specific facts to help illustrate my point

  • uncheckedSomeone suffering with an eating disorder dies every 52 minutes.
  • uncheckedEating disorders affect all people, it’s not a myth.
  • uncheckedPeople misinterpret eating disorders for a mental illness

Myths included:

  • uncheckedEating disorders aren’t a choice, nobody chooses to have an eating disorder.
  • uncheckedOnly females have eating disorders: they actually hurt all people of different genders, ages, races, religions. Sexual orientations, and body shapes.
  • uncheckedYou can’t recover from an eating disorder: actually recovery and treatment is possible.

Your support for eating disorders is critical because your constituents have benefitted from the program. I support this because of past experience and struggles with my body but always remembered that it always gets better.  I would like to request a written response on this issue and my contact information is attached to this message. Thank you for your service and consideration.

Sincerely,

Jenna McCarron

The purpose of this letter is to urge your support for recognizing Eating Disorders Awareness Week, an initiative that highlights the critical importance of addressing eating disorders. These conditions are among the most fatal mental health disorders, yet they are often misunderstood and stigmatized. By raising awareness, we can help dispel harmful myths, promote recovery, and advocate for systemic change to ensure that individuals affected by eating disorders receive the support and treatment they need. As a constituent with personal experience in this area, I feel strongly about the need for increased awareness and action on this issue.
