Types of eating disorders
Anorexia Nervosa
An eating disorder characterized by restriction of food intake leading to low body weight, typically accompanied by intense fear of gaining weight and disturbed perception of body weight and image.
Bulimia Nervosa
Bulimia nervosa is one type of eating disorder in which a person regularly eats excessive amounts of food (binge eats) and then attempts to eliminate (purge) the consequences of overeating by vomiting, taking laxatives or diuretics, fasting or exercising excessively. This is often referred to as “binge and purge.”
Binge Eating Disorder
Binge eating is when you eat a large amount of food in a short amount of time and feel you can’t control what or how much you are eating. If you binge eat regularly—at least once a week for 3 months—you may have binge eating disorder. If you have binge eating disorder, you may be very upset by your binge eating.
Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder
Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder, more commonly known as ARFID, is a condition characterized by the person avoiding certain foods or types of food, having restricted intake in terms of overall amount eaten, or both.
Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorder, Pica and Rumination Disorder.
Pica behaviour (PB) must not be socially or culturally accepted, and should be severe enough to warrant clinical attention as pica disorder beyond the treatment of comorbid diagnoses (APA, 2013). Rumination disorder is characterised by recurrent regurgitation of previously ingested food.
