SOCL 306: Stress & Crisis in Families
Reflection
Throughout the course Sociology 306: Stress & Crisis in Families we worked in groups to create a booklet to help families around Farmville with their preschool-age children. We created “The Parent Toolbox: Practical Tips and Strategies for Parenting Preschoolers”. In the booklet we put activities you can do with your child, common challenges parents face with this age group and strategies to reduce them, the importance of mental health, and self-care tips for parents. I learned a lot from this project and course. Finding resources for this project was reverently easy because lots of research has already been done for this population. Developing resources for this project and parents was sometimes difficult but overall a very fun experience. It was hard to come up with tips for certain things but working in a group and talking about our ideas made it a lot easier.
Parenting Toolkits are a really good way for parents to learn about their children and how to interact with them. They can also help reduce stress and build resiliency. Some parents get overwhelmed while parenting and do not know what is best for their child so it causes stress but when they have access to these toolkits they can read them and reduce that stress. This project is a great tool for sociology students to complete because it allows us to learn how to collaborate with classmates. I believe that this project was set up really well throughout the semester so that it did not feel overwhelming. However, to make this project process better I think we should have stayed in our small groups the whole time. When we got paired up with another group it got to be too many people and some people would take charge and leave others out. I also think knowing the whole budget for the project would be better because we could understand what it will look like from day one.
This project helped me grow my collaboration skills, communication skills, artistic skills, and technology skills. It was really cool to learn about different AI and how it could help us on this project. AI made our pictures in the booklet and they came out fantastic. No matter people’s opinions about AI it will be in our society from here on out and we can not do anything about it. It is better to learn from it and learn how to use it than be afraid of it and this project helped me to learn more about AI. All of these things I gained from this class and the project will help me in the workplace and in graduate school. During the project, I would contribute my ideas of what I think would look good. I helped research tips for parents on how to parent their children. I would make sure to keep the other team members updated in our group chat. My team worked great with each other and it was a very pleasant experience.
