On March 24th, I attended the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Virginia (SHAV) Conference in Richmond, VA. I sat in on a variety of sessions throughout the day. The first two were in regards to a multimodal approach for intervention with children using AAC. I also attended an afternoon session about the basics of intervention for those with autism, and visited the student poster presentations. Throughout the day, I learned valuable new information that I can incorporate into my own therapy techniques. I look forward to returning to SHAV in future years!
ASHA Convention 2016

This year I had the privilege of attending the 2016 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s annual conference. The conference was held in Philadelphia, PA at the Philadelphia Convention Center. I was in attendance from Thursday, November 17th to Saturday, November 19th and was able to sit in on 7 different seminar sessions.
Each of the sessions was very informative and full of new information to learn. A few of the topics discussed included behavioral regulation, core vocabulary, eliciting /r/, and strategies for articulation therapy. I enjoyed each session, but especially the one on behavioral regulation and how important it is for a child to obtain before academic gains can be made. The presenter was very knowledgeable and gave us several real-life scenarios in which we could use the techniques she was discussing.
I also presented a case study poster about a previously served client with three of my CSD peers. Our poster was titled, “Supporting Intelligibility in a Russian Speaking Adult with Repaired Cleft Palate.” I am very grateful for the opportunity to present at ASHA and look forward to similar opportunities in the future.
I am excited to return to the ASHA Convention for many years to come!

This year I had the privilege of attending the 2016 Speech-Language Hearing Association of Virginia’s annual conference. The conference was held in Chantilly, VA at the Westfields Marriott. I was in attendance from Thursday March 17th to Saturday March 19th and was able to sit in on 4 different seminar sessions.
Each of the sessions was very informative and full of new information to learn. I chose to attend a session on Language in the Classroom, Techniques for Eliciting /r/, Dysphagia, and Teaching Literacy through Art. I enjoyed each session, but especially the last one on Art and Literacy. The presenter was very knowledgeable and gave us several real-life scenarios in which we could use the techniques she was discussing.
I also presented a research poster at the student poster session. My poster was titled, “Impact of Linguistic Load on Syllable Control in Speech.” I completed the research project for my Speech Science course last school year and continued to work on finalizing my poster leading up to SHAV. I am very grateful for the opportunity to present at SHAV and look forward to similar opportunities in the future.
I am excited to return to SHAV next year and for many years to come!
2015 SHAV Conference

This year I had the privilege of attending the 2015 Speech-Language Hearing Association of Virginia’s annual conference. The conference was held in Richmond, VA at the Double Tree by Hilton. I was in attendance on Thursday March 26th from 8:00am to 4:30pm and was able to sit in on 4 different seminar sessions.
Each of the sessions were very informative and full of new information to learn. I chose to attend a session on Augmentative and Alternative Communication, The Use of Interpreters, Infant Feeding, and Autism. I enjoyed each session, but especially the last one on Autism. The presenter was very knowledgeable and gave us several real-life scenarios in which we could use the techniques she was discussing.
They also had a separate room in the hotel with numerous vendors from all over the state. A handful of them were selling products and the others were advertising for their respective businesses. I think this is a great feature for students who will be seeking employment in just a few years. Although I will not be graduating until May of 2017, I am glad to have already had this type of experience. I look forward to returning to SHAV next year and for many years to come!
