Formal Report

The formal report consisted of many different areas of professional, business writing, including: a letter of authorization, a letter of transmittal, an introduction, an executive summary, surveys and figures, a series of analyses, and recommendations and conclusions. I was able to learn significantly through this process, and I was able to effectively implement all of the course learning objectives as listed below:

  • Course Learning Objective One: Analyze and produce writing genres commonly found in the professional world (e.g. business, gov., media)
  • Course Learning Objective Two: Create professional documents that use plain English (clear, concise, and grammatically correct)
  • Course Learning Objective Three: Conduct research to create content for a variety of professional documents (memos, letters, reports, etc.)
  • Course Learning Objective Four: Create professional documents that use design – standard formats, layout, use of graphics, etc.
  • Course Learning Objective Five: Practice oral communication skills to present content effectively
  • Course Learning Objective Six: Participate productively in collaborative projects

Because of the length and multiple aspects of this assignment, my group (S. Turner, C. Senft, and I) had to collaborate and delegate productively in order to create the formal report. It was critical to use the “eight C’s” of business writing (clear, concise, concrete, complete, courteous, coherent, constructive and correct) in order to successfully communicate. By using these eight C’s, we create logos, or credibility, as a “company”.  We as a group had to be mindful of multiple different formats (letters, executive summaries, analysis, appendixes, etc.) as we created the document as a whole. We also had to implement effective design as we implemented research from surveys through graphs and figures in our report. Not only were we able to produce this professional writing, we were also able to analyze other business websites for grammar, formatting, and design. We ended this project with a 15 minute oral presentation to our class, condensing our content into an effective PowerPoint presentation in which we discussed as a group what we accomplished and learned in this project.  This assignment definitely was a great instructive tool that let us apply what we had learned all semester into one, specific project.
