Research Experience

Throughout the semester, we have learned a lot about doing academic research. I have learned more about what to look for and what to think about when doing this research. When looking for sources, I did my best to find peer reviewed journals that were relevant to both my dependent and independent variables so that I would be able to compare the two as that was what the study was aiming to do. Their were not too many issues that I had to overcome during this process, but one of them was actually finding sources that were relevant to both my independent and dependent variables. This took some time at first, but with some hard work and determination, I was eventually able to find enough sources to use. This included using JSTOR as well as Google Scholar to find all of my peer reviewed journals. I also ran into some issues with converting tables into the correct format, but I was able to overcome this with a few quick Google searches. My attitude towards research has definitely changed throughout the semester as this was different than the research I have done for any other class I have had before. This was much more professional and the process had to be much more thought out in advance and throughout conducting research. I think what it means to “think like a researcher” is to consider all aspects of the variables that you are studying. Even after the research is complete, you must look at it and think about things that you would do differently and things that you would do the same if you were to do it over again or further your research in the future.
