Exercise Science is a term applied to physical activity, sports, exercise, and athletic performance and the movement and adaption of the body within those areas. Through the history of Exercise science, it is said that it derived from the academic discipline of PE. However, it originated initially from Greeks and Romans such as Hippocrates, Aristotle, Plato, and Socrates that realized the importance on the body and exercise. The Renaissance influenced the view of the body as a machine onto the idea of Exercise Science. The Enlightenment brought the knowledge of heart rate, muscular anatomy, blood pressure, cardiac output, and oxygen consumption during exercise. These origins influenced 19th Century physicians to learn the important connection between health and exercise. People of this time period also grew an interest in the enhancement of athletic performance. The 20th century then brought the physical fitness tests that we all completed in middle school and also innovations such as the Harvard Fatigue lab. Exercise Science in the 21st century will continue to enhance and spread its influence to the world.
