Entering Research I

Entering Research I is a valuable class that has taught me many important research and interpersonal skills. A valuable experience for me was talking with a professor about the research that they have conducted. I spoke with Dr. Gee about her research on mosquitoes and rainwater harvesting systems and I really enjoyed our conversation. Speaking with Dr. Gee has made me interested in conducting research with a professor in the future. The most valuable lesson that I learned in Entering Research I was how to write a scientific paper. I liked that we focused on each individual section of a scientific paper because it helped me focus on areas where I could improve my writing and research skills.

Our scientific paper was based on data collected from the Chesapeake Bay during the LIFE STEM Summer Bridge. The primary focus on the Chesapeake Bay in the class helped me learn more about the environment and the world around me. What I found most interesting was learning about the interconnection of environmental factors that affect the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay. I worked with my classmates on the analysis and discussion of dissolved oxygen data from the Bay which taught me about collaboration and teamwork.

Entering Research I has prepared me for any future science courses I will take and for a career in the field of environmental science. My critical thinking and problem solving skills have strengthened as a result of taking this course. Overall, Entering Research I has been a great learning experience.
