Service

Service has always been very important to me and it is one of the things that made Longwood stand out to me.  The honors college always finds a way to give back, and help whenever possible. From my first week during the honors retreat to my last week as a freshman, I have been emersed in many service opportunities.

During the honors retreat, we focused on the pillars of the honors college. Since Service is one of them, we all participated in a day of service. My group worked with Clean Virginia Waterways and cleaned up behind Macados. We collected all types of trash. We then separated everything into different piles based on categories and then took note of how much and etc. I have also been given the opportunity to work with Clean Virginia Waterways again with Alpha Lambda Delta. We did the same thing I did during the retreat, but this time we picked up trash on the sides of streets. Each time I was able to learn something new and feel a sense of accomplishment because I knew my one act of service was bettering the planet in a small way.

I have also helped out during, many honors events, but those do not feel like a service to me because I would have done it either way. I can not wait to see what other opportunities come my way revolving around service. Hopefully, I can continue to help out in any way I can, and learn along the way too.
