Personal skills that I bring to the counseling profession include: positivity, responsibility, and determination. Positivity will aid me in helping clients push through their setbacks, find and focus on what they can fix, and see the strengths of all clients during their difficult times. Secondly, I pride myself in accomplishing what I say I will complete, complete things before or by due date, and do not allow for myself to slack and affect others negatively. My determination is something I constantly work to improve and maintain. If I set out to accomplish something, I fight through all challenges to achieve it. Though many individuals can say they bring one or two of these qualities, the way I employ them when working with individuals is unique and unmatched.
Limitations related to becoming a counselor that I plan to continue to work on include not judging others when they make a decision I disagree with. I know that all clients have self-determination and the ability to make decisions for themselves. Sometimes when a decision is made and I feel a better one could have been made, I often speak my mind and say how they could have chosen something better. Strategies I plan to employ to overcome this limitation include recognizing when those moments come, addressing the feelings behind those immediate judgements, and putting myself in the client’s shoes to see reasons why they made have made that specific choice. Utilizing determination to implement these strategies will allow me to overcome my limitation.
