3.3: Prepare and present, orally and in writing, to scientists in other disciplines and audiences outside the sciences

I have had a lot of experience with presenting to audiences within the Biology department, but not as much experience doing it to outside audiences. The only times I had the opportunity for this was in the two times I presented at the Research Showcase. The fall of my sophomore year was my first time presenting at the showcase for Bio 251. Within a group, I presented on a research project we worked on for the second half of the semester on the tunneling behavior of ants in different soil types. The next time I was given the opportunity to present at the Research Showcase was the following semester for Bio 250. This project was on identifying two genotypes in two individuals using SNPs. However, more of my experience from this came from preparing the poster itself. With COVID, the showcase was virtual that year, so I was not able to actually present the poster to others. However, it was uploaded for people to see and it had been designed to be relatively easy for those in other disciplines to understand.

Currently, I am working on two more presentations for the 2022 Research Showcase. It will be in person and as such I will be able to effectively share my research projects with those in other disciplines. My poster presentation is for my Bio 488 class and it is based on proposed research into the genetic link to Bipolar Disorder. The next presentation is a group oral presentation for Bio 404 where, in a group, we assessed symptoms and ran tests to diagnose an immunodeficiency in a fictional patient. The tests are broken down and the immunodeficiency itself is explained enough to be understandable. Neither have been attached as they are still in progress.
