HON Phil 308: Introduction to Ethics
This class was one of many favorite classes that I have taken so far at Longwood. I really enjoyed learning about the different types of ethical thought and how to argue for ethics. However, the most important thing I learned in this class was that I wanted to study philosophy. Originally, I took this class to fulfill a pillar and an honors slot. It was mostly just to check off a few boxes. However, after the first few weeks of class, I knew I wanted to continue learning about philosophy. So, I talked about double majoring in both English and Philosophy. When I realized that I couldn’t do that, I didn’t hesitate in filling out the paperwork for the Philosophy minor. I submitted the form right after Christmas break my first year. I am so glad I took this course and was able to discover my love for philosophy.
The artifact I have chosen to include from this course is one of my extractos from the course. An exactro is a written assignment where students choose a topic that interests them and find an article that claims the topic is morally right or wrong (I chose euthanasia). The student must then state whether or not the article made a valid argument and why. The extracto does not include an opinion of whether or not the student agrees with the article. I do not state my own opinion on euthanasia, only the merit of the argument made in the article I am writing about.
