Independent Samples T-test
An independent samples t-test was used to compare the means of the population that is involved with Greek life and those who are not involved in it. The independent variable is the population either being involved with Greek life or not involved with Greek life. The dependent variable was whether or not this semester had a negative effect on your mental wellbeing for college students. The test was processed through R-Studio. Group 1 was the participants who agreed that there was , and Group 2 was the participants who were not involved with Greek life. These variables relate to the level of overall mental wellbeing under COVID-19. Because of COVID-19 all Greek related events were cancelled making it difficult to socialize. This can have an impact on the level of mental stability of a student through the semester and the overall college experience. Participants who weren’t involved within Greek life may not have been as impacted by the changes because they weren’t involved in them anyway.
Table 1
Independent Samples T-test being involved in Greek life or not and effect on effect on mental wellbeing
Groups | Mean | t |
Effected | 1.57 | 4.24*** |
Not Effected | 1.77 |
Note. p<0.05*, p<0.01**, p<.001***
N=433
The T-test had 303 participants that were mentally affected by the first COVID-19 semester. It shows that 130 participants were not affected mentally by the semester. The t-value for both of the groups was 4.24. The groups p-value, also known as the significance, was .00003. This would pass alpha level .05, .01, and .001 as it is less then all three. Therefore, there is no significant difference between people in Greek life and those who don’t participate in Greek life when asked whether or not that the past semester had an effect on their mental wellbeing.
