Relevant Work:

ESPN +

In November of 2018, I was hired to work as a camera operator for ESPN+ covering Big South Conference sports year round. This includes Basketball, Field Hockey, Soccer, Baseball, and Soccer for both Men and Women. This job has assisted me in becoming better at filming live action without error. The job also entails graphics such as scores and stats for the games when off camera duty.

Relevant Coursework:

Digital Editing – In 2017, I took this digital editing course for my digital media concentration. This course expanded my familiarity with video and sound editing. This was where I first was introduced to Adobe Premiere and Adobe Audition. Prior to this course I only held experience with Final Cut Pro X. Throughout this course I learned different styles of editing and camera work. This course made me a more efficient editor of media.

Media Production – This course focused on the more advanced parts of creating pieces of media. I was required to show my ability to film with flawless continuity, create news packages, and make a professional promotional video for 3rd Street Brewing in Farmville, VA. Additionally, I learned how to operate in a television studio. I gained to skills of audio leveling, camera switcher boards, floor directing, and script writing.

The Art of Film – The art of film is course that teaches about different styles of filming, editing  and acting in box office films. This course taught me about lighting, angles of shots, movement, race and gender portrayals, and editing based on different themes. This course helped me with how I edit my videos based upon the message I am trying to portray.

Introduction to Media Writing – This course introduced me to professional journalism. Throughout the semester I was required to discover, research, and write five stories that took place in Farmville, VA. This was a difficult task with Farmville being such a small town. Two of the stories were required as news and the other three were feature pieces. Additionally, there were mock press conferences that would occur during the semester with a breaking news story. We would have to write a wire story within the hour and follow up semester by the end of the day. This course helped me realize that there is always some news or story to tell, no matter how small a town.

Advanced Media Writing – Similar to the introduction class, we also had five news or feature stories to write throughout the semester. However, in this course the deadlines were significantly shorter with a requirement for more interview sources and substance. There were two mock press conferences, where our professor was refusing to release information. These activities required me to dig deeper and find the story that was hidden under details. There were additional in-class assignments that tested the atmosphere of a real-world news setting. The most challenging assignment was to cover a breaking news story with updates being fed to us as we were writing. I was required to post a Facebook post, Twitter threads, push notifications, and an in depth story simultaneously. This course helped me understand the face paced, hectic, and research basked work setting that comes with journalism.

Building Your Professional Brand – Out of all of the courses that I have taken, this one may have the greatest impact. Through this course I have learned valuable lessons that I will carry with me through the remainder of my professional life. One of the most valuable outcomes of this course is that I developed an strong sense of communicating with others through networking. I’ve learned how far strong and professional communication can take someone.
