Position statement II

The introduction to Counseling Course 503 has helped me see the pathway in front of me more clearly. Firstly, it helped me to decide on the internship and placements that will be my ally in becoming a competent counselor. Through this coursework and panel discussion, I got to know the cruciality of supervision while we were in training. I therefore applied to do a practicum in the caps. Without going through this coursework, I would not have made this decision. Secondly, I am sure that I will get the licensing in Virginia state. Before going through this course work, I barely knew the process and support I would have alongside my residency process, I had minimal idea about the different work settings for counselors. Now that I know there can be a handful of options, I have decided to do residency in Virginia. Furthermore, I have decided to put more attention and effort into getting membership in professional organizations and getting involved in research projects for my professional development.

The belief that was challenged was the concept of ‘pride’ in one’s profession. Before, I always associated the word pride with the opposite of humility. But now I have understood that pride in one’s identity as a counselor is actually a positive value that will enable us to advocate for our profession. I can now see how humility in one’s work and pride in one’s profession can go hand in hand. Besides these, I am still as enthusiastic to become a professional counselor as before and want to complete my coursework and internships with fabulous learning experiences. However, the career pathway in front of me looks much clearer after taking this introductory course.
