Credentials Needed/Sought and Plan

My immediate goal is to pass the comprehensive exam by the spring of 2026 and graduate from the program in the Summer of 2026. I am starting my internship in the summer of 2025. My intermediate goal is to become a licensed professional counselor (LPC). After graduation, I plan to do a residency in Virginia to pursue the license to become an LPC within 3-4 years. I plan to work within a university setting as a resident where I will be getting excellent supervision, which is mostly a part of the job and free of cost. Besides LPC, I plan to pursue certification as a Registered Expressive Art Therapist (REAT). It requires additional training and 500 hours of extra supervision to become a registered expressive art therapist. I am passionate about healing trauma, and I have realized in my past work experience that expressive art therapies are beneficial to trauma survivors. Moreover, I want to specialize and get certified in emotionally focused couple’s therapy (EFT).

In the long run, I want to do a PhD in counseling and become a professor in the university. Teaching and counseling both works have been close to my heart while I was in Nepal. I want to educate counselors in training along with my counseling practice eventually. I will also get memberships in organizations such as the American Counseling Association, Virginia Counselors Association, and The Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development (AMCD).
