Exploring Livingston

Our pack explored the town of Livingston on Monday May 16th from12:30-2pm. When we first started out we began by walking from a neighborhood to the main part of town. This town is surrounded by the beautiful mountains.

The houses we saw were your basic small town homes, small with a unique build for each house. There was not much of a run down part of town, which makes sense with the median house values being $164,500.  One interesting thing we did notice was that instead of a rain gutter running all the way down from the gutter to the ground they had chains or little buckets of some sort.

We also spent time in a park. It was well maintained and had a swing set and play area. While walking through town we noticed a lot of antique, thrift stores, and art museums. We spoke to several friendly business owners. One commented on how she loves this town because of their sense of community even with being a tourist town as well. According to the U.S. Census, Livingston is 96% white, which was apparent while roaming around the town.  Many of the businesses in Livingston uses the mountains in their logos. In our observations, Livingston is a tourist town with a small town vibe as well. Meaning Livingston does rely on tourism, but that is not the whole purpose of the town. In general, Livingston seemed to be a genuine community.

  1. I really liked y’alls blog! I wish that I had gotten the opportunity to visit Livingston as well. I find it so interesting that they have antique stores and thrift stores, since in Jackson, Gardiner, and West Yellowstone, I did not see a single store of this type. This place seems to be much more of a residential area, as you all stated. It would have been really neat to see a more of residential area near Yellowstone, rather than just tourist towns.

  2. I must say y’all did a fantastic job on observations of the town of Livingston. I went to West Yellowstone for my last trip and something I wish I would have done was look at the houses and such to get an idea of how they looked compared to the median house value. I also like the “bucket” drainage system! Seems pretty innovative to me. I also like the the repetition with the mountains as logos for companies, it shows that they really emphasize the idea of an outdoor and recreational town. Overall great observations!

  3. It is apparent that while you guys traveled around Livingston you were very observant, noticing changes from our communities and theres, like the use of chains for gutters. Not only did you give observations, but also gave quantitative data of the town. The use of qualitative and quantitative data gave me a great idea of what the town of Livingston is like.

  4. I enjoyed your blog post. I found it interesting that the town of Livingston is 96% white. When compared to Gardiner and Jackson, Livingston definitely did not feel like as much of a tourist town. There were many residential areas, community centers, and parks. Did you notice how there was a very sudden change from nice residential neighborhoods, to run down trailer parks across the street?
