Return to Honors Courses

Biology 324

Bio 324 was Genetics. In addition to regular genetics lectures and lab, myself and three other honors students spent about an hour each week outside of class working on a semester-long project. Through this project, we hoped to create a bacteria that could successfully identify metals in water with genetic engineering.

I did not enjoy genetics as much as I expected. I was rather overwhelmed with the amount of class material dealing with sub-cellular mechanisms. I also struggled with the honors portion of the course. However, I did gain a much better understanding of the building blocks of life.

Attached is a picture of the e. coli we were engineering. The green one has been modified with green florescent protein (that glows when exposed to metal) while the other has not. Green Florescent Protein
