Intro Environmental Law & Policy
This course provided an overview of concepts pertaining to both national and international law and policy. It examined a number of prevalent acts such as the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Endangered Species Act (ESA), Clean Water Act (CWA), Clean Air Act (CAA), and the Resources Conservation and recovery Act (RCRA). These Acts and other laws and policies were analyzed in the context of climate change and global warming, sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, in addition to transboundary issues such as air pollution that affect more than just one country or place. Understanding law and policy is very important in a field such as environmental science where controversial issues intersect the environment and the economy and require us to work together with other nations to formulate a plan and make a change.
Linked below is a paper I wrote on a controversial issue in environmental law and policy; I chose deforestation. The paper involved exploring the issue, summarizing the views of various stakeholders, including scientific findings that underlie the issue, and including a review of the laws and state or federal agencies that control the issue. This paper was an excellent way of applying law and policy topics to real world issues, namely one that I have an interest in.
