Spanish 111 was largely a review after 5 years of high school Spanish, yet I learned a lot more since I already had an idea of the vocabulary for many of the units we went over, it allowed me to better focus on culture, and how Spanish is quite different in different areas of the world. One activity that stood out to me, though it was pretty simple, was when we looked at the McDonald’s menus in different countries. It was something we could all relate to, with fast food being such a huge attraction in our modern times, and it showed how different food culture can be. I had never even realized that McDonald’s had different things in different places!
Linked here is a PowerPoint presentation completed at the end of the semester. The PowerPoint may not look like much more than some photos and a few keywords, but the presentation was primarily speaking based off of these visuals as well as some short notecards. This was probably the hardest presentation I’ve had to do to this day (2019); it was spoken in Spanish ONLY, and we didn’t have much to read off of so you really had to know what you were talking about in order to freeform a dialogue. Also, being about a different place and culture, there was a decent amount to memorize about Puerto Rico. On many levels this presentation helped me feel more confident in general presenting, and put me way out of my comfort zone to teach me something new.
