MATH 301

Applied Statistics

This course was a much more technical expansion upon math 171. First, it focused on classification of data and what types of statistical procedures are appropriate for various types of data. Then, we utilized the software “R” to run various statistical procedures and create graphical summaries for different data sets. This was really useful as determining the significance of a data set is often something one must do in any science course or career that performs research or experiments, including environmental science.

Linked in the above title is a statistical paper written on How polyester decays in landfills. Data was analyzed to determine if burial time has a significant effect on the strength of the fabric, which would indicate the extent of decomposition. A One-way ANOVA test was used to test the relationship between one quantitative and one categorical variable with more than two categories. This was of particular interest to me as it is the type of data I could possibly be working with in the future with my IES major.
