GEOG 495

Special topics in Geography

This course was an expansion upon the introductory to geographic information systems (GIS) course. Knowledge and skills learned in GEOG/EASC 275 were furthered by examining more advanced geoprocessing techniques, raster analysis, terrain analysis, interpolation, and cartographic modeling. The previous GIS course utilized ArcGIS software, but this course was really helpful as it introduced QGIS, an open-access and (in my opinion) easier-to-use mapping software that is most importantly free! Now that I am able to use QGIS, I can continue to practice GIS beyond Longwood without paying a fortune. This is extremely important for keeping my expertise fresh for the job market.

Another interesting and different thing we completed in this class was the Clifton Strengthsfinder assessment (reflection linked below). My top 5 strengths were: Restorative, Responsibility, Strategic, Ideation, and Adaptability. I feel like I learned a lot from this assessment. Reading the details of the results, there were not many surprises and I think these strengths suit me well. But, it put into words what I might not have been able to describe about myself, which can be useful for interviews and job applications.
